GIS DEVELOPMENT METHODOLOGY
The
following illustrates the step by step approach to the creation of a GIS:-
-
Procurement
of Satellite Imagery preferably of 0.61 m or 1 m resolution. The latest
the vintage of the imagery the better.(1 m res means that a 1 sq. m
area on planet earth appears as 1 pixel in the image). Some GIS users
may want to use aerial Photography.
-
Most Satellite
imagery is already georeferenced when purchased, if its not or if the geometric
accuracy is low, it is refined by georeferencing via GPS control points.
-
The satellite
imagery is digitized (converted to vector). Points, Lines and Polygons
are used to represent locations, roads, and land parcels respectively using
Autodesk Map 3D 2005.
-
All available
information about these locations, roads, and land parcels (if available)
is either annotated on the vector map or attached from database to the
vector map as attribute data.
-
The product
thus developed is called a Digital or Vector Base Map. This is the essence
for a GIS. The quality of a GIS is determined by the accuracy of the Base
Map.
-
Customer
layers of interest; e.g. electricity cable network, water pipeline network,
transportation routes etc depending on the GIS being developed are superimposed
on the Base Map. This is the most critical phase in the entire process
of GIS development. The client provided information from their schematics
must overlay on the Base Map accurately. (In many of such cases, an
expensive field survey is required often utilizing GPS technology or even
otherwise. Use of GPS can be avoided at this stage by using print out/s
of satellite imagery while doing survey.)
-
Once the
customer schematics are properly overlayed, the customer data is connected
to these layers as attribute data.
-
Queries
are now generated based on the requirement (purpose) of the intended GIS.
-
This Conventional
GIS is ready to be implemented using Autodesk Map 3D 2005.
-
In case
an Intranet or Web (Internet) based GIS is required, the above system hitherto
called Back-end GIS is web enabled using Autodesk Mapguide Author. Any
industry GIS can be Web enabled be it in Autodesk Map, ESRI ArcInfo, or
MapInfo etc using Autodesk Mapguide.
-
Once Intranet/Internet
enabled, the GIS is hosted on a Company Server (Intranet) or a Web Server
(Internet).
-
Intranet
based GIS is company confidential and offers quick reporting and thematic
information to company managers for prompt decision making.
-
Internet
based GIS is viewed by public and serves to provide geographic information
to general public the world over. Many city governments across the world
use this facility to host their geographical websites.
-
Professional
solutions such as Vehicle Tracking, Fleet Tracking, Match Ticket sales
etc. are implemented using similar systems.
-
The GIS
can be viewed on a Palm top computer within a GSM network's domain if required,
using Autodesk Onsite Enterprise software. Outside of GSM Network, Radio
Modems are required.
